<span style="color: windowtext;">Happy
Thanksgiving. Well actually, not very happy about the election results, but I still have a lot
to be thankful for. Like all the music I heard at the October Folk Alliance
gathering in </span><st1:city>Seattle</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;">. Let me tell you about some of that.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gWE_HUt94xM/WC5FLUUAMeI/AAAAAAAABlE/KzJOODUUhu0CindBvtwdFsBiDK99kYkngCEw/s1600/Scott%2BCook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gWE_HUt94xM/WC5FLUUAMeI/AAAAAAAABlE/KzJOODUUhu0CindBvtwdFsBiDK99kYkngCEw/s200/Scott%2BCook.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;"><a href="http://www.scottcook.net/news.php">Scott Cook</a> is a Canadian
troubadour well worth some of your ear time. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1evEG_L9-zo">Here</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6R0W_QbGHr8">hear</a>. That is just a tiny tidbit of all the great
music that was happening at the conference.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">In
addition to the official showcase performers in the concert hall, there were late night
showcases in the hotel rooms, from </span><st1:time hour="22" minute="30">10:30pm</st1:time><span style="color: windowtext;">

I hosted a showcase room with my pal, <a href="http://keithalanmitchell.com/">Keith Alan Mitchell</a>, and yes we had a quite
a time. Nathan and Jessie, who I have already told you about, played our
room. Other folks who joined us include </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">I
had the pleasure of driving north to </span><st1:city>Seattle</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;"> with Susan Reeves, and <a href="http://www.reevesnzat.com/">Reeves 'n Zat</a> played a couple of shows on
our way up to FAR West. And of course,
we did some showcasing at the conference too. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFOkeX5JNZg">Here</a> ye, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_TP115R5NI">here</a> ye.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">I
played a couple of dates in November, but mostly I have been consumed by my
house remodel. It is very exciting to
see it starting to take shape, and we still have a ways to go before the music
parties can start. A big thank you to
Wolfgang Dilger at <a href="http://www.bauhausconstruction.net/">Bauhaus
Construction</a> and his skilled and hardworking crew. No way I could do this on my own.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">No
gigs on the calendar for December, but January will be busy. I'll be joining the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/listeningroomretreats/">Listening Room Retreats</a>
tour for a bunch of dates from </span><st1:city>Monterey</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;"> to LA. After the LLR tour, I will play a set at J.C. Hyke's <a href="http://www.jchyke.com/songwriter-serenade.html">Songwriter Serenade</a> on the 24th, and the next night drop in on Brad Colerick's <a href="https://wineandsong.com/">Wine & Song</a>. At the end of the month, I'll be at the <a href="http://www.summersongs.com/the-camps/california-camp-winter-2017/">Wintersong Songwriter Camp</a>. </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Show info is on my
website, <a href="http://www.royzat.com/">www.royzat.com</a>, as usual. At my current
newsletter pace, I will be back to you February-ish with music to share from
these adventures.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

since I started back in February of 2012.
I have been moving and remodeling and I suppose that is an excuse, but
it really isn't. Just having too much fun carpentering and too tired by the end of the day, I guess. At any rate, I am
back in the saddle with Music News You Can Use.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext; font-size: 12pt;">First up is to tell you about the 2016 Kate Wolf Music
festival, which was amazing as usual. (And no, it was not too hot.) The </span><a href="http://katewolfmusicfestival.com/2016-lineup/" style="font-size: 12pt;">line-up</a><span style="color: windowtext; font-size: 12pt;"> was phenomenal
and I did not see all the acts - with four stages going, that was
impossible. </span></div>

<span style="color: windowtext; font-size: 12.0pt;">Saw the <a href="http://www.thebrotherscomatose.com/">Brothers Comatose</a> for the first time.
I had heard about them for years and they are a stand out; good songs,
great arrangements, blazing musicianship and a lot of fun. Enjoy <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyoBQ8992c8">this</a> and put them on

I am looking for performance dates along the road from San Francisco to Seattle. Any of you Northerners interested in having a house concert? Know of any nice folk clubs or coffee houses that might be interested in some California hillbilly music?<br />
<br />
I'll be driving north in mid-October to attend the FARWest Folk Alliance conference. Susan Reeves will be traveling with two of her Honeysuckle Possum bandmates, and we are all hoping to play some shows together on the way. <a href="https://youtu.be/F1NWSaC2DGg">Here</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq2BZE3VHnk">here</a> are a couple of videos from my recent mini-tour with Susan, and you can see the rest at <a href="http://www.reevesnzat.com/"> www.reevesnzat.com</a>. You can see the Honeysuckle Possums in action <a href="http://www.honeysucklepossums.com/listen/">here</a>. Good times guaranteed :-)<br />
<br />
We are very excited about the possibility of doing some performances together. Thanks for any leads, ideas or suggestions you might have. <br />

Here on the new homestead in Santa Rosa, I am mostly a construction worker these days. But, I have gotten out and done a little exploring of the Sonoma County music scene, too. Last Saturday, I saw <a href="http://www.arannharris.com/">Arann Harris</a> at the Mystic Theater in Petaluma. What a fun show!! I couldn't find any live videos that captured the energy he delivered on stage, but <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeoNXbZ_NA4">here </a>and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8p_MqDS4Mjk">here </a>are a couple to show you how much fun he is -- and how good his band is. <a href="http://www.seanhayesmusic.com/">Sean Hayes</a> opened the night with his fine songs -- what a very soulful guy!! <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jby8tPI6elg&list=RDCHts3i4yWms&index=16">He<span id="goog_1454104962"></span><span id="goog_1454104963"></span><span id="goog_1454104959"></span><span id="goog_1454104960"></span>re</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Mystic is a rock club and you can have a good time if you bring your ear plugs. About an hour into the show, I went up and asked the sound man to turn down the sub-bass which he had gradually pushed up to the point of beating my chest in and covering up too much of the rest of the mix, IMHO. He frowned at me but he did it; and just to annoy him further, I went back in about 10 minutes, after I had time to appreciate how much better it sounded, and I interrupted him again, I told him thanks and gave him a $20. I enjoyed that.<br />

<br />
Went to a music party last Sunday, hosted by Peg and Gary Grubb in their back yard. A few us sat in, but mostly it was a concert by Gary and his red hot country picking buddies in the <a href="http://www.hotgrubb.com/wordpress/hotgrubb-band/">Hot Grubb</a> band. Like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SyVKA5Oq5A">here </a>and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpLwwhpAxpc">here</a>. These guys are so tight; I was grinning ear to ear, for the pleasure of sitting in with them. Thought you had to go to Nashville to hear pickers and singers like that.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.bornluckyband.com/">Born Lucky</a>, my band with Michael Hanna, has a show next Sunday at the <a href="http://www.kensingtonfarmersmarket.org/">Kensington Market</a>, near Berkeley. This is one of our favorite outdoor venues; quality produce and fine lunch fare, with lots of seating in front of the band -- much more than your average farmer's market. We'll have some fun.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ByfqwdkMrgk/V1zpEM941tI/AAAAAAAABgM/9ovz7LkG11Ug1yscp6hZymKRyJPE8s3uQCLcB/s1600/bandage-on-finger.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ByfqwdkMrgk/V1zpEM941tI/AAAAAAAABgM/9ovz7LkG11Ug1yscp6hZymKRyJPE8s3uQCLcB/s1600/bandage-on-finger.jpg" /></a></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Public Service Announcement: Construction and music is a dangerous combination. I sliced the index finger on my left hand real well, about ten days ago, and had a date to play at the Hopmonk Sonoma. Playing with a band-aid holding your finger together is not conducive to good fiddling, but I did okay and there was no blood on the strings. You carpenter pickers be careful out there and I will too.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Other construction news: the bedrooms are painted and carpeted, bathrooms just about done. Linda and I are hoping to move in at the end of June. The major remodel of the living and dining rooms and kitchen is a few months away. I have an architect and structural engineer working with me on that. We'll have to get the City of Santa Rosa's blessing, and then I'll need to find a contractor to work with. To be continued. </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That's a bit of my news. Hope you are doing well too; I always like hearing what you are up to. And again, any gig ideas or suggestions for the North Country will be greatly appreciated.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S_0k185vKzY/Vy5zbFgXUkI/AAAAAAAABcw/Yj9XywDJ7eQnn379-fOQsy_Riz-7MZPjwCLcB/s1600/3411%2BSidney%2BFront.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S_0k185vKzY/Vy5zbFgXUkI/AAAAAAAABcw/Yj9XywDJ7eQnn379-fOQsy_Riz-7MZPjwCLcB/s200/3411%2BSidney%2BFront.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<span style="color: windowtext;">Big news indeed!! I just bought a
house in </span><st1:city>Santa Rosa</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;">. The months of
searching high and low paid </span><span style="color: windowtext;">off. Here
are views of the front and side looking out at the view. Very pretty spot, and almost a third of an
acre with room for a croquet court, garden, orchard, racoons, wild
turkeys and no doubt, gophers.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

what I'll be doing over the next year to forever. Painting and re-carpeting is going on now in the
bedrooms, but the big project is to open up the kitchen, dining and living rooms
into a space for music gatherings and house concerts. And that will take awhile. Feeling frustrated about Trump or Hillary? Come visit. I'll give you a big hammer to knock down a
couple of walls.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

unnamed songwriter series is homeless. Damn!! Running a venue is very much a labor of love, and Ken Frankel and his family put a lot of heart and not a little money into it. </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Ken has contributed much to the Bay Area music community over the years; and you can read a
bit about that, and hear his music and see some fine videos too, </span><a href="http://www.kenfrankel.com/music_info.html">here</a><span style="color: windowtext;">. What will he do next?</span></div>

So, my songwriter series is on hold for now. Big thanks to all the people who sent in name suggestions -- over 50 in all. I am keeping them and will rekindle the contest when I have a place. To be continued . . .</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">To find that place where I can hold house concerts and control my own destiny (hah!!), I am busy house hunting in the greater Santa Rosa area. Add hosting music to my other criteria -- quiet location, aesthetic surroundings, good neighbors not too close, not hard to find or get to, commutable to SF and Bodega, and affordable -- and it is quite a challenge. I have looked at a lot of places, and the perfect spot has not shown up yet. Something like this maybe? Wish
me luck and send me leads if you have any.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">I mentioned
briefly in my last newsletter that I am starting a songwriter series at <a href="http://www.studio55marin.com/">Studio 55</a> in </span><st1:city>San Rafael</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;">. I need a
descriptive, engaging, and yes, even enticing name for this series. So, let's have a contest !! The winner gets four free tickets to the
inaugural show, plus a big thank you from the stage, and in my newsletter.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.studio55marin.com/images/HomeTop/IMG_0060%20525x350.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://www.studio55marin.com/images/HomeTop/IMG_0060%20525x350.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a><span style="color: windowtext;">The idea of the series is to
provide a comfortable place for our local community to discover great music
from both established and up-and-coming songwriters. I am
passionate about this scene and want to share the richness of what is being
created by stand-out singer songwriters who are often below most people's radar. In terms of format, we will have two main
acts, and allow time for a few drop-in musicians to play a song or two also. We'll start with shows every other
month or so, and if you are interested in more, we'll have more. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">A little more information to
help you with naming ideas: Studio 55 is
one of the best listening rooms I know of in the SF Bay Area. Sort of an updated version of the old
Freight & Salvage; about the same size; intimate and with exquisite sound run by the same
folks who do the new Freight's sound. Wine,
beer, tea, coffee and snacks are available. Easy
to get to and easy parking. In short, it
is a fine place to go out to for live acoustic music.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">Now that I have your idea machine starting to churn, I have to tell you that some really good names are taken: Steve Key's
<i><a href="http://www.songwritersatplay.com/">Songwriters At Play</a></i> and Brad Colerick's <i><a href="http://wineandsong.com/">Wine & Song Concert Series</a></i> to
mention two, and who wouldn't want to come out for play, wine and song!? <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">So email me your suggestions, as many as you want. If two or more people suggest the same
winning name, the first one to me gets the prize, the other will get a bottle of wine and honorable mention. We'll make a decision by May 1st and we'll
have our first show June 18th -- mark your calendar.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">Other news: I have a show with <a href="http://keithalanmitchell.com/">Keith Alan Mitchell</a> and <a href="http://www.amberikeman.com/">Amber Ikeman</a> at the <a href="https://oaklandoctopus.org/">Octopus Literary Salon</a> in </span><st1:city>Oakland</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;"> on March 19th. Both are fine writers and talented
singers; and it is an honor to be sharing the evening with them. Listen to a couple of songs (<a href="https://soundcloud.com/amber-ikeman/save-me">here </a>& <a href="https://soundcloud.com/keithalanmitchell/10-the-low-way">here</a>) to whet your appetite, and join us if you can. After that, I am headed down to </span><st1:city>Santa Barbara</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;"> to rehearse with Susan Marie Reeves for our May <a href="http://www.reevesnzat.com/">Reeves 'n Zat</a> tour. Check out my <a href="http://www.royzat.com/#!shows/c1yim">website </a>for more show info and
news.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

People ask me what I do with my time now that I am retired. Well apart from the usual day to day, and the settling in from moving to Sonoma County, I work on shows. I play twice a month or so and it is amazing how much time goes into putting shows together, practicing and playing them. It is a lot of work, but the money I pull in makes it all worthwhile -- hah !! It is the amazing musicians I get to hear and hang with. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LxaE2yhVHbU/Vsuj-WNXNGI/AAAAAAAABUc/BSTDMnxhdUI/s1600/Bazaar%2BCafe%2Bwith%2BKelly%2BSisters%252C%2BAireene%252C%2BMcNevin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LxaE2yhVHbU/Vsuj-WNXNGI/AAAAAAAABUc/BSTDMnxhdUI/s320/Bazaar%2BCafe%2Bwith%2BKelly%2BSisters%252C%2BAireene%252C%2BMcNevin.jpg" width="320" /></a>Discovered a really fine place to hear singer songwriters in San Francisco, the <a href="http://www.bazaarcafe.com/">Bazaar Cafe</a>. (I know I am slow sometimes.) On the first Saturday of this month, <a href="http://www.bornluckyband.com/">Michael Hanna and I</a> opened a show for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_6-g2ERdKk&index=1&list=PLnHUBIwobnBnb3sO3oIfd4Z72KG96i0n2">Valerie Jay</a>, and I then had the fun of sitting in with Valerie during her set. The following Tuesday, I crashed the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tyb7p_RzWP8">Keller Sisters</a> songwriter residency at the Bazaar, and had the pleasure of hearing and playing with them (sister harmonies!!), and with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrJaiAcRrak">Aireene Espiritu</a> and with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnHN-uCSOEg">Michael McNevin</a>. It was hat night and Michael Torrey's picture here gives you an idea of the fun we had. If you don't know these folks' music, check out the links. They are good !!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Michael Hanna and I were joined by Dennis Calloway this last Sunday at the <a href="http://www.kensingtonfarmersmarket.org/">Kensington Market</a>. What a lot of fun that is !! Families hang out and picnic, and we get to sing "Wheels On The Bus" in addition to our usual folk, country and original repertoire. Best run farmers market I know of, and if you live anywhere close by you should check it out. </div>

Coming up this Friday the 27th, <a href="http://www.trevormcspadden.com/">Trevor McSpadden</a> will be in Pt. Reyes Station at the <a href="https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=old%20western%20saloon%20pt%20reyes%20station">Old Western Saloon</a>. Trevor is genuine old school country and just great. It may be a bit of drive for you, but it will be worth it. Trevor comes from Texas and spent a lot of time in Chicago, a good combination based on what I hear. I'll be opening with a half hour set and then joining Trevor and his band for the rest of the evening. Honky Tonkin' Baby !!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Got a number of shows in the works: with Keith Alan Mitchell and Amber Ikeman in March, with Floyd Latimer in April and with Susan Marie Reeves in May. Always more info on my website, www.royzat.com</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Saving the best big news for last. I am going to be starting a singer songwriter series at <a href="http://www.studio55marin.com/">Studio 55 Marin</a>. This is a wonderful place to hear live music, and I am very excited to be working with Ken Frankel and Olga Kapustina on this project. You'll be hearing a lot more about it.</div>

<span style="color: windowtext;">I
attended two songwriting workshops the first half of January, and I have a lot

your Thanksgiving was tasty and heart warming.
I was in </span><st1:place><st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;">Washington</span></st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;"> </span><st1:state><span style="color: windowtext;">DC</span></st1:state></st1:place><span style="color: windowtext;"> with family and met the younger daughter of my </span><st1:city>Durham</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;"> cousins. She
is a pro DJ and I went to hear her work at RedRocks, a 3 story downtown dance
club and a very different scene than I usually circulate in. She is into African and Latin and it was a
treat hearing her put together the grooves.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6fdxX6pTwE&list=RDQ6fdxX6pTwE#t=168">Here</a>
is a video of her in action, a bit different than what I saw her spinning for
the dance crowd, and what a wild child!!
(Start at 30 seconds to skip the slow intro, and if you skip around make
sure you see </span><st1:time hour="15" minute="20">3:20</st1:time><span style="color: windowtext;"> on. Whee !! )<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">Closer
to home and earlier in the month, I caught <a href="http://darolanger.com/index.php?page=homepage">Darol Anger's</a> show at
Studio 55 Marin, a fine place to hear acoustic music. It had been awhile since I had heard Darol
live, and my first time hearing him play with <a href="http://darolanger.com/index.php?page=about&family=projects&display=139">Emy
Phelps</a> -- lovely!! Darol's fiddle and octave mandolin was wonderful, and Tristan
Clarridge on cello was a treat. The interplay between all the instruments
and the vocals was major league.
Unfortunately no videos of that show, but <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBQ0T_bX4eo">here</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN9Ss53HAik">here</a> are two to give you
an idea. Tristan plays with Crooked
Still and with the Bee Eaters -- so check out those videos too.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: windowtext;">Also
saw two shows at the Monkey House in </span><st1:city>Berkeley</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;">, another favorite venue. <a href="http://www.moonshinejelly.org/">Moonshine
Jelly</a> is a "celtic, gypsy, bluegrass, folk" trio of uber talented
folks including Lee White, Justine Lucas and Kent Kessinger. They play in SF a lot and are well worth your
time and ears. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu8WFn-JRc4">Here</a> is a sample and <a href="http://www.moonshinejelly.org/music.php">one</a> more a bit different. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: windowtext;">November
and recovery from the October FARWest conference has been going well. It was four days of musical bliss and little
sleep, and three weeks later I am still buzzing and have so much music to tell
you about !! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--bIaAYkbfVI/VjqTNtKyf7I/AAAAAAAABQE/4TJS-BY2Dyg/s1600/SEA%2Bat%2BFreight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="146" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--bIaAYkbfVI/VjqTNtKyf7I/AAAAAAAABQE/4TJS-BY2Dyg/s200/SEA%2Bat%2BFreight.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">Things
started on Wednesday, October 14th with a showcase at the Freight &
Salvage, where over twenty-five FARWest attendees each presented a song. So much talent and variety, ranging from
traditional folk music like Bay Area <a href="https://vimeo.com/83401899">SEA</a>,
to powerhouse vocalist <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di0CxUrvgs4">Kristin
Shey</a> visiting from Germany. Thursday night's concert featured artists
nominated by five different </span><st1:state>California</st1:state><span style="color: windowtext;"> venues, including newcomer <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWoA_fJETVc">Jody Mulgrew</a> and veterans
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl0StK7hfIQ">Cascada De Flores</a>. The music at FARWest goes into the way wee
hours, and later that evening I had the pleasure of hosting Jody and his
fiddler friend, John Nowel, in my hotel showcase room. And a whole bunch of others!!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

much wonderful music over the rest of that week and weekend, how do I choose
what to share with you ?! I'll
try. If you don't know him already,
listen to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gual9CVvVNs">Severin Brown</a>. A couple of official showcase winners for
you: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaNWJysic0I">Jalan Crossland</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMdBHIK6Txk">Berkeley Hart</a>. And additional discoveries from my own showcase
room: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX7ROE6KTss">Mark & Cindy Lemaire</a>,
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4ApvU-AKy4">Ynana Rose</a>, and for
something completely different, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNPVa4p7FYw">Grego Dana</a> !! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">And if all that weren't enough, I won the grand raffle prize, a beautiful F style mandolin by M. David McClaskey. Wow !! Guess I'll be looking up <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njXObuqrzgI">Sharon Gilchrist</a> for some lessons.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

Sunday, he and I will be joined by Dennis Calloway at the <a href="http://www.kensington-market.ca/Default.asp?id=home&l=1">Kensington

such a fun place to play with quality produce, tasty prepared foods, and lots

!! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
October, the holidays just around the corner and my birthday!! I
get my kicks at 66 this month. Rites of
passage: I had cataract surgery a couple of days ago, and I am a new member of
the bionic tribe. They took out the
damaged lenses in my eyes and put in plastic ones; like having contact lenses
inside your eyes. It is wonderful to be
seeing the world so clear and purdy without the fuss of eyeglasses or contact
lenses. Amazing times we live in.</div>

I had the pleasure of playing with <a href="http://www.jcandlaney.com/">JC

small but appreciative audience and had a great time. I confess I was hoping for a packed house
because they are such fine performers. I have been posting a lot of videos
from that night, so maybe next time they come to town we can bring in a bigger
audience for them. (Ah, the life of the
impresario.) <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzQPWUqZG48">Here</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n62hnjz6ypo">here</a> are a couple of videos

<span style="color: windowtext;">Two weeks ago, I was at a cowboy

is September, and quite toasty in the SF Bay Area. I am
just back from the <a href="http://www.strawberrymusic.com/Home.aspx">Strawberry
Music Festival</a> over the Labor Day weekend.
Since the old home was burned out in the fires of 2014, this festival
was held just outside of the town of Tuolomne.
It was dry and dusty, and we missed the beautiful trees, but that didn't
hold back the flood of fine music, in camp and on stage. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSU9vIzFCzk">Dave Alvin</a> and his band,
and the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=209&v=dS4QaNRGqK0">Brothers
Comatose</a> put on great shows; and the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=16&v=BqOmYnsPbN4">T - Sisters</a>
were angelic. New to me, were the <a href="http://www.thewoodbros.com/">Wood Brothers</a>. All three of them are
innovative and stand-out players; and with great songs and arrangements, they
were dazzling !! Their <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=69&v=3U0arXdrvlE">videos</a> are
good, but live they are something special.
Put them on your list of bands to see.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">Playing
into the wee hours at Strawberry, and then at Labor Day jams has gotten me
limbered up for this coming weekend. By
now you have hopefully heard about the <a href="http://www.jcandlaney.com/">JC

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">My big excitement these days
is the upcoming show I have with <a href="http://www.jcandlaney.com/">JC and
Laney</a>, a duo I met at the FARWest gathering several years ago. They live in </span><st1:place><st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;">Mesa</span></st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;">,
</span><st1:state><span style="color: windowtext;">Arizona</span></st1:state></st1:place><span style="color: windowtext;"> and don't get out here very often. I hope you can join us on September 11th at <a href="http://www.monkeyhousetheater.com/">the Monkey House</a> in </span><st1:city>Berkeley</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;">. I promise
you, they put on a great show and it will be quite an evening. Some videos to tantalize you: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6IcQiptUzo">here</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60-Ao7AcMbk">here</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=396OlltQooA">here</a>. I'll be opening with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=21&v=mPWLqHTjeb8">Michael Hanna</a>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">And speaking of FARWest,
preparations for the <a href="http://www.far-west.org/far-west-2015.html">October
conference</a> in </span><st1:city>Oakland</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;"> have been underway for quite awhile now. This will be my fifth year attending and
volunteering. If you are a folky
musician of any flavor and have never been, you should. Three days of non-stop music of the highest
order. If you are fan, you can come to
the evening shows which showcase the best of the best. I'll tell you more about that next month.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_pWYBlQW9h0/VdzbYIXr8mI/AAAAAAAABGs/2aogqnqUhrU/s1600/FARWest%2B2015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_pWYBlQW9h0/VdzbYIXr8mI/AAAAAAAABGs/2aogqnqUhrU/s320/FARWest%2B2015.jpg" width="85" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">That's the forward view, and
now the review: had a very fun show with
<a href="http://keithalanmitchell.com/">Keith Alan Mitchell</a> in </span><st1:city>Oakland</st1:city><span style="color: windowtext;"> a couple of weeks ago, and played a wedding and
farmers' market this month also. But, I
was sorry to miss <a href="http://www.jimmylafave.com/">Jimmy LaFave</a>'s Bay
Area shows this last month. Damn!! Put him on your list -- a voice to run a
chill up your spine and put a tear in your eye. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9IjvSGdVq8">See</a> what I mean.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: windowtext;">Spending quite a bit of time
up in </span><st1:place><st1:placename><span style="color: windowtext;">Sonoma</span></st1:placename><span style="color: windowtext;"> </span><st1:placetype><span style="color: windowtext;">County</span></st1:placetype></st1:place><span style="color: windowtext;"> these days, looking for a place to start a house
concert series. And won't that be fun
!!<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: windowtext;">So that is a bit of my news,

Top of the list is <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.mandolinorange.com/" href="http://www.mandolinorange.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Mandolin Orange</a> (click the play button on their website). Oh my -- right up there with Gillian and David. The other group that knocked me out was <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.riverwhyless.com/" href="http://www.riverwhyless.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">River Whyless</a>. Watch <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.riverwhyless.com/images/2014/12/8/river-whyless-widows-walk-audiotree-live" href="http://www.riverwhyless.com/images/2014/12/8/river-whyless-widows-walk-audiotree-live" style="color: #0782c1;">this</a> and stay with it -- it takes off big time. And there were lots of other great <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.enoriver.org/festival/music.html" href="http://www.enoriver.org/festival/music.html" style="color: #0782c1;">acts</a>. So much fine music in two days !! Oh, I almost forgot to mention, there was also this <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzRCHMO9GVk" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzRCHMO9GVk" style="color: #0782c1;">guy</a>.</span></div>

We share a common great grandfather, and this was the first time we had met. It was wonderful and a bit uncanny. We look like brothers; definitely from the same part of the </span>DNA <span style="color: windowtext;">pond.<br /> </span><br /><span style="color: windowtext;">I got back to </span>California<span style="color: windowtext;"> on July 10th, after almost 8 weeks on the East Coast. <span style="color: windowtext;">Since getting back, I have been playing parties and events pretty much every weekend -- like Teddy Bear Picnic day at the SF Zoo.</span> <span style="color: windowtext;">(The Berenstein Bears were even there!!)</span> <span style="color: windowtext;">Otherwise, </span> <span style="color: windowtext;">I've been working on preparations for the </span><a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=43&v=k42_4KPkvsE" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=43&v=k42_4KPkvsE" style="color: #0782c1;">FARWest</a><span style="color: windowtext;"> Folk Alliance conference in Oakland in October. </span> <span style="color: windowtext;">If you are a folk/roots/americana flavored musician, you want to be there. </span> <span style="color: windowtext;">Four days of shows, jams, workshops, networking -- like nothing on earth!!</span> <span style="color: windowtext;">I've been hooked on FARWest for five years now.</span></div>

It has been a lovely month stepping into my grandpapa role. Young Henry has been doing all the proper baby things and the new parents are adjusting pretty well. I've been helping out with shopping, cooking and chores, but I have been enjoying the riches of </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Washington</span> <span style="color: windowtext;">DC</span><span style="color: windowtext;"> a lot too. Teresa Tudury has a <span class="aBn" data-term="goog_1841198425" style="border-bottom-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-bottom-style: dashed; border-bottom-width: 1px; position: relative; top: -2px; z-index: 0;" tabindex="0"><span class="aQJ" style="position: relative; top: 2px; z-index: -1;">Sunday</span></span> afternoon jam at her little shop, <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_26129508_41546893_lnk1010&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FSuchFineThings" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">Such Fine Things</a>, in Occidental, CA when she is not on the road. I dropped in the last couple of Sundays, and had such a fine time !! I wrote about Teresa way back in Februay 2013: "Here is a fun <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_26129508_41546893_lnk1011&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DeydQo-fT9Mg" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">video</a> to give you a sense of Teresa, but she is so much more in person. She has a background in musical theater, including many years with Beach Blanket Babylon; and she can be a riot one moment and so poignant the next." All so still true !! <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_26129508_41546893_lnk1012&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D7GjxVn-kl9s" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">Here</a> is another one of her fine songs. This guy cranks out great songs !! An old song for Steve is a couple of years old - for me that is one of my more recent songs. Steve has a rich country voice, like a blend of Merle H, Randy T., and John A. <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_26129508_41546893_lnk1013&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DbWGA_x1s_S0" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">Here</a> is a video, with Gary Grubb, a fine player in his own right; and here are some tracks on Steve's <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_26129508_41546893_lnk1014&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdbaby.com%2Fcd%2Fsteveharr" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">CD</a>.</span></span><img alt="" class="CToWUd a6T" src="https://ci6.googleusercontent.com/proxy/E2oAqhIdTn8KetZ29eeNYCmR-REzccpj9M8fsouEyJSFWlZnFy4gqRmd9E4kLg9g9uJGn2WaeaULywG1HBPBbhOBHeXlQO2wB-exZkymLI29biyssztRrDCMtO5vN5FgnJ1mfIZ_1LGhyCDVVg2Nwcg48tM=s0-d-e1-ft#http://gp1.wac.edgecastcdn.net/802892/production_public/UserFile/448886/file/Carson_Valley.jpg" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 5px; color: #111111; cursor: pointer; float: right; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; max-width: 550px; min-height: 167px; outline: 0px; text-align: justify; width: 250px;" tabindex="0" /><br />

Well if I am going to get out an April newsletter, I had
better get to it. Been down with a bad
cold but I am finally back in action.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
First, musical discoveries to share with you: I met
and heard Doug Gill and Lynn Langham last month when I was at Steve Key’s
<a href="http://songwritersatplay.com/">Songwriters At Play</a> show at Sculpterra Winery in Paso Robles. Doug and Lynn are veteran writers and performers from the
Nashville area with impressive credentials, and it was a treat to hear such pros. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS1mhEsNhAM">Here</a> is one of Doug’s
songs. I take inspiration from Doug’s
comments at the beginning of this video.
It is a long and sometimes rough road winding. And <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DzJGHXW2xy4">here</a> is one of Lynn’s
songs. You’ll find more of them on
Youtube, of course. Wonderful writers
and very nice people.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
I mentioned that I have been starting to use a looper pedal
so that I can put down a guitar part and then play fiddle. Sort
of like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySoOkE92KlY">this</a> only
more hillbilly.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
My gig at the Monkey House last month went well, though we
missed <a href="http://dulcietaylor.com/">Dulcie Taylor</a> who came down with the flu the day before the show. (Every performers worst nightmare!) Michael
Hanna, my playing partner in <a href="http://www.bornluckyband.com/">Born Lucky</a>,
stepped in to help and with <a href="http://www.aireeneespiritu.com/">Aireene
Espiritu</a> and <a href="http://www.iramarlowe.com/iramarlowe.com/bio.html">Ira
Marlowe</a>, a good time was had by all.
<a href="http://youtu.be/mPWLqHTjeb8">Here</a> is a video of one of
Michael’s songs. <o:p></o:p></div>

Gigs coming up: This
Sunday the 26th, I’ll be at the <a href="http://www.hopmonk.com/sonoma/music-and-events/events-detail/?event_id=492910">Hopmonk
Tavern</a> in Sonoma with Michael Hanna.
And I’ll be at <a href="http://ruthmcgowansbrewpub.com/">Ruth McGowan’s</a> in Cloverdale on May
16th. Some private
events too, and then I am on my way to
Washington DC to become a grandpa.</div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Yes, you read that
right: I am going to be a grandpa. The little fiddler-to-be is due on May 22nd. How exciting is that !!??<o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="color: windowtext;">Chilly blow the winds of March. Ha!! Not in LA. You would think it is May or June.<br /><img alt="" data-cke-saved-src="//gp1.wac.edgecastcdn.net/802892/production_public/UserFile/441916/file/SnapShot1_1_.jpg" src="http://gp1.wac.edgecastcdn.net/802892/production_public/UserFile/441916/file/SnapShot1_1_.jpg" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 5px; cursor: default; float: right; height: 169px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; width: 300px;" /></span><br />
<span style="color: windowtext;">I've been here the last week or so, and had the pleasure of performing at four different venues. Heard a lot of talented players, and I have a lot to share with you. But first, a big thank you to <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.chappellanddaveholt.com/" href="http://www.chappellanddaveholt.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Chappell and Dave Holt</a> for inviting me to join them and share their tour. We had fun and made some pretty good music together, I think.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: windowtext;">Put <a data-cke-saved-href="http://kulakswoodshed.com/" href="http://kulakswoodshed.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Kulak's Woodshed</a> on your radar screen. Very fun, intimate club with a fully pro, six camera set-up and video crew. The quality is excellent and the talent level is high. You can see shows live on the web, and there is an archive of past shows too. <a data-cke-saved-href="https://youtu.be/XVuFfE_dyyk" href="https://youtu.be/XVuFfE_dyyk" style="color: #0782c1;">Here </a>is a clip from our Friday show. We opened for <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.severinbrowne.com/" href="http://www.severinbrowne.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Severin Browne</a> and his powerhouse band. <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnpaXOoyZ0U" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnpaXOoyZ0U" style="color: #0782c1;">Here</a> they are in action. Yes, what an honor to play at Kulak's! </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: windowtext;">On Tuesday, we were at <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.jchyke.com/songwriter-serenade.html" href="http://www.jchyke.com/songwriter-serenade.html" style="color: #0782c1;">JC Hyke's Songwriter Serenade</a>, and had the pleasure of hearing JC, David Joy, Brooks Taylor and ourselves. JC has a <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFw7s423xZc" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFw7s423xZc" style="color: #0782c1;">song</a> that every itinerate singer songwriter needs to know. (And what a bunch of pickers he rounded up!!) JC doesn't have a video facility so you will just have to attend in person next time you are in the </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Pasadena</span><span style="color: windowtext;"> area. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: windowtext;"><img alt="" data-cke-saved-src="//gp1.wac.edgecastcdn.net/802892/production_public/UserFile/441920/file/Brad_s_Wine___Song_-_Mar11_2015.jpg" src="http://gp1.wac.edgecastcdn.net/802892/production_public/UserFile/441920/file/Brad_s_Wine___Song_-_Mar11_2015.jpg" style="border-style: solid; border-width: 5px; cursor: default; float: left; height: 206px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; width: 275px;" />Wednesday, I was at <a data-cke-saved-href="http://bradcolerick.com/" href="http://bradcolerick.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Brad Colerick's</a> <a data-cke-saved-href="http://wineandsong.com/" href="http://wineandsong.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Wine & Song</a>, another well known songwriter showcase you need to attend. <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.annativel.com/" href="http://www.annativel.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Anna Tivel</a> and <a data-cke-saved-href="http://justinfarren.com/" href="http://justinfarren.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Justin Farren</a> did fine performances, and both are very worth some of your screen time. Watch <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIxCgCfkOZE&t=118" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIxCgCfkOZE&t=118" style="color: #0782c1;">this</a> and <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-LFEow00as&t=97" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-LFEow00as&t=97" style="color: #0782c1;">this</a> I also sat in some, and played a couple of my own songs. At the end of the evening, we played "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" in memory of <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2015/03/11/billy-block-champion-roots-music-dies-age/70179754/" href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2015/03/11/billy-block-champion-roots-music-dies-age/70179754/" style="color: #0782c1;">Billy Block</a>, one of the founders of the </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Americana</span><span style="color: windowtext;"> music scene in LA, who had died that day. This picture shows a ray of light shining down across the stage onto <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.dailynews.com/arts-and-entertainment/20130110/paying-homage-to-producer-ed-tree" href="http://www.dailynews.com/arts-and-entertainment/20130110/paying-homage-to-producer-ed-tree" style="color: #0782c1;">Ed Tree</a>, one of Billy's good friends and former band mate. A very moving and spiritual moment.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: windowtext;">What is particularly wonderful about the folk scene here, beyond the high level of talent, is the welcoming and supportive community. Shows are well attended and I've seen many familiar faces, some at all three of the shows above. I like to think the same thing exists in some corner of the Bay Area but I haven't found it. Can anyone set me straight? Or maybe, I need to help start it -- hmm.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: windowtext;">This Saturday, I will be at the <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.coffeegallery.com/home.html" href="http://www.coffeegallery.com/home.html" style="color: #0782c1;">Coffee Gallery Backstage</a>, another well regarded folk club, to see <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.johnzipperer.com/" href="http://www.johnzipperer.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">John Zipperer and Friends</a>, and <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.jcandlaney.com/" href="http://www.jcandlaney.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">JC & Laney</a>. I have a hunch it is going to be another great night of music, like <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqM7qgBIQNg" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqM7qgBIQNg" style="color: #0782c1;">this</a> and <a data-cke-saved-href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60-Ao7AcMbk" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60-Ao7AcMbk" style="color: #0782c1;">this</a>. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: windowtext;">Sunday I am back on the road north. I will stop over on the </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Central</span> <span style="color: windowtext;">Coast</span><span style="color: windowtext;">, where I'll play in Steve Key's <a data-cke-saved-href="http://songwritersatplay.com/" href="http://songwritersatplay.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Songwriters At Play</a> showcase at <a data-cke-saved-href="http://sculpterra.com/" href="http://sculpterra.com/" style="color: #0782c1;">Sculpterra Winery</a>. It has been a busy few weeks since my last newsletter. Main priority has been wrapping up my CD -- it will be out at the end of February. Yay!! Here are a couple more songs for your listening pleasure: <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1009&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Froy-zat%2Fwho-zat-04-cluck-old-hen">Cluck Old Hen</a> and <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1010&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Froy-zat%2Fwho-zat-06-back-to-the">Back To The Mountains</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I also have redone my <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1011&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.royzat.com%2F">website</a> and put up a new website for the <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1012&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bornluckyband.com%2F">Born Lucky Band</a>, my collaboration with Michael Hanna. This was in response to very helpful input from Kyle Weber at <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1013&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.indieonthemove.com%2F">Indie On The Move</a>, mentioned last month. Already have one more date booked on the East Coast and a number of possibilities brewing as a result of working with him. Exciting!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have not been much of an open mike fan in the past, but a post from <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1014&url=http%3A%2F%2Faristake.com%2Fpost%2F11-reasons-why-you%27re-failing-at-open-mics">Ari's Take</a> inspired me, and I got out and had a good time at a couple of them this last week: the <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1015&url=http%3A%2F%2Fivyroom.com%2Fevent%2Fbay-area-music-showcase-open-mic-night-3-2-2014-11-05%2F2015-03-04%2F">Ivy Room</a> in Albany, run by Burke Trieschmann, and the <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1016&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgroups%2F178472868886565%2F">First Street Cafe</a> in Benicia run by Chris Bryant. Both are well attended and have a good mix of styles and level of talent. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3nJKdxbum34/VN1NQjRgJOI/AAAAAAAAA7c/VosAOSh9pGc/s1600/David_Pendleton.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3nJKdxbum34/VN1NQjRgJOI/AAAAAAAAA7c/VosAOSh9pGc/s1600/David_Pendleton.jpg" height="200" width="163" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speaking of talent, I heard an excellent gypsy jazz guitarist and singer at the Benicia open mike. David Pendleton lives in Athens (the Greek one) and was visiting his dad. No links to share with you because David doesn't have a website, no Youtube videos, no Facebook page, no CD -- he just plays music full time on the street and in clubs, and supports himself doing it. Sounds like another era, doesn't it. Nice to hear that this is still possible. Maybe if I spent more time playing and less time on the computer . . . hmmmmm.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Going to be rehearsing with <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1017&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chappellanddaveholt.com%2F">Chappell and Dave Holt</a> over the next few weeks getting ready for our trip down to Los Angeles at the beginning of March. Dates are on my calendar below; if you are in the neighborhood would love to see you. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I want to mention another date. On March 28th,I'll be opening a show, Songs From The Heart For The Heart, with Dulcie Taylor and Aireene Espiritu. This will be at the <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_24777483_41546577_lnk1018&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.monkeyhousetheater.com%2FMONKEY_HOUSE%2FHOME.html">Monkey House Theater</a> in Berkeley. I suppose it would have been more ideal to have it on Valentine's Day but heartfelt music is right any time, right?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And on that note, I hope you get lots of love on your Valentine's Day.</div>

the last half of October recovering from the first half. The FAR-West
conference was wonderful as expected -- the amount of talent crammed into four days
was awesome!! Go see <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_23360642_41546577_lnk1009&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DZC3Sn2Cw5zw" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">Beth Wood</a>, who closed the Friday night concert and is
playing in the Bay Area through <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_23360642_41546577_lnk1010&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bethwoodmusic.com%2Fshows%2F" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">November 14</a>. She is phenomenal!! Here is
a <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_23360642_41546577_lnk1011&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.far-west.org%2Fshowcases2014.html" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">list</a> of all the other official showcase winners, well
worth your listening/viewing time. After the evening concerts, the music went
on in the hotel rooms until the wee hours. Here's a <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_23360642_41546577_lnk1012&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DsUiiT--mYDE%26list%3DLLtmt2hx6Hydw-QiAcufhmeA" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">snippet</a> of Vi Wickam putting some very sweet fiddle
on one of my tunes.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1415139494301_2308" style="color: windowtext;">Wrapping up my CD got put on the back burner with
all my volunteering for the FAR-West conference, and at this point, if I can get
it out by the end of 2014, I will be happy. Here is one of the
tracks: <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_23360642_41546577_lnk1013&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Froy-zat%2Fjohn-roy-zat-who-zat-06-back-to-the-mountains" id="yui_3_16_0_1_1415139494301_2307" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">Back To The Mountains</a>. This is a traditional
fiddle waltz, I wrote words to. I like doing that when a melody grabs a hold
of me. I wrote the first verse about 20 years ago and finally brought
the rest of it home a few years ago. Sometimes good things take times.
Hope that is the case with the new CD.</span><br />

two fun gigs recently, a set at the El Cerrito Folk Festival, and a radio show on
KALX. Got some video which looks promising and I'll be posting it in a
week or so. I have some more shows coming up this weekend and next (on my

All you singer-songwriters out there hopefully already know about it and are going. For the rest of you, there will be concerts on October 16, 17 and 18 that are open

<span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2926" style="color: windowtext;">Happy September -- starting to feel like Fall in </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2929" style="color: windowtext;">Northern California</span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2921" style="color: windowtext;">,

This last month, I took a couple of weeks off from my music business to visit family
up in </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Oregon</span><span style="color: windowtext;">,
eastern </span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2930" style="color: windowtext;">Washington</span><span style="color: windowtext;">, and </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Idaho</span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2931" style="color: windowtext;">. Filled my heart with joy to meet two new babies, and to reconnect
with nephews, cousins, in-laws and my 92 year old Uncle Robert. On the way
to </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Idaho</span><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2932" style="color: windowtext;">,
I drove through the Palouse country which I hadn't seen before, lovely rolling
hills planted in wheat, barley, lentils, garbanzos and peas. Beautiful!!</span><br />
<br />
<span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2933" style="color: windowtext;">Back in the Bay Area, I caught <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_22428035_41546577_lnk1009&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpages%2FAireene-Espiritu-Music%2F122944617779684" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">Aireene Espiritu's</a> excellent CD release show at the
Freight last week. She put together a fine band for the evening, and <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_22428035_41546577_lnk1010&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.claudiarussell.com%2F" id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2934" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">Claudia Russell and Bruce Kaplan</a> did a nice opening
set too. No gigs of my own during August, but I sat in with friends
<a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_22428035_41546577_lnk1011&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chappellanddaveholt.com%2F" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">Dave and Chappell Holt</a> and Randy Rood, at their show
at the Arlington, a favorite little spot in the Berkeley hills. And I was
honored to play the fiddle in my nephew's wedding ceremony this last weekend.
It is amazing how tunes come back that I haven't played in years, just takes
a couple of hours of noodling.</span><br />
<br />
<span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1409789410957_2935" style="color: windowtext;">I have been finalizing my CD project, which now
has a name: "Who Zat" (hmm . . . wonder what I'll call
the next one). I put up a pre-view track for you <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A1796764_22428035_41546577_lnk1012&url=https%3A%2F%2Fsoundcloud.com%2Froy-zat%2Ffake-it-til-you-make-it" rel="nofollow" style="color: #111199;" target="_blank">here</a>. Would love your feedback on it, especially
on the drums? What do you think? It is a bit of a departure from
my folky, rootsy sound.</span><br />

busy taking care of the hundreds of details that go into putting on this wonderful
gathering. I confess I wonder sometimes why I ever agreed to co-chair it,
but we'll get through the crunch, and it will be a blast as always.
The general public is welcome at the evening performances on October 16, 17 and
18. The talent line-up is always amazing -- really the best of the best.

<span style="color: windowtext;">August!! Vacation!!
I am hot and happy at Emigrant Lake near </span>Ashland, Oregon<span style="color: windowtext;"> on my way to visit family in </span>Portland<span style="color: windowtext;">
and then on to </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Moscow</span><span style="color: windowtext;">, </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Idaho</span><span style="color: windowtext;">, and <img align="right" alt="" src="https://scontent-b-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/t1.0-9/10561777_513768208724769_337647681433904447_n.jpg" style="border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 10px; border-left-style: solid; border-left-width: 10px; border-right-style: solid; border-right-width: 10px; border-top-style: solid; border-top-width: 10px; float: right; height: 188px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 10px; max-width: 550px; width: 250px;" />then </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Richland</span><span style="color: windowtext;">, </span><span style="color: windowtext;">Washington</span><span style="color: windowtext;"> and wind my way back down the </span>Oregon<span style="color: windowtext;"> and </span>California<span style="color: windowtext;"> coasts.
It is nice to have a break.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: windowtext;">Part of what made the last few months so busy was
wrapping up the recording and mixing of my third CD. That is now done, and
it is on to the mastering engineer for that magic something they do. I'll
be back to listening and obsessing when I get home in a couple of weeks. I
am lucky to have Dorcas Moulton doing the CD package design and art work, no small
task. I am hoping to have "product" in hand by the end of
September, ready for the October FAR-West conference in </span>Oakland<span style="color: windowtext;">.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: windowtext;">And, preparations are heating up for that.
Once a month conference calls have become every other week; we'll be talking
weekly starting in September, and always lots of email traffic. Official showcase
performers have been selected and showcase rooms are filling up. Exciting
seeing it really starting to take shape. I like to refer to <a href="http://www.far-west.org/">FAR-West</a> and Folk Alliance, the parent organization,
as a business organization for folk musicians, and it is; but the public is welcome
at the evening concerts during the conference too, and those shows are a treat.
Getting a spot in the these concerts is very competitive and the performers are
among the best. I'll tell you more when we are closer to the conference.

<span style="color: windowtext;">If you are Facebooker, you already know that our
show at the Monkey House with Steve Key and Kyle Alden went well. Great turnout
(thank you!!) and a great show. It was a pleasure playing such a nice room
and with such fine performers. I have video from that night, and hopefully
will have highlights of the show to share with you by the end of the month.
No promises :-)</span></div>

<span style="color: windowtext;">That's it for me. Hope
you are all doing great and enjoying the summer. Now, back to camping
